“This has got to be the worst idea you have ever had.”
“Y’know, considering how many times you’ve said that, I’d say that statement’s completely inaccurate by now.”
Kaguya groaned, dragging her hands down her face and thinking the same thing she had been thinking almost on repeat like a broken record all day long.
‘How the hell did I end up here?’
There was an easy answer, sure, but ‘here’ specifically was a bit more complicated. When she had agreed to go to Paris with Otohime and her family, she was ecstatic. She’d always dreamed about visiting one of the fashion capitals of the world and doing some serious shopping, plus she had heard it was just a beautiful, romantic, and cozy place to be over all. She was in love with the concept of travelling, so when given the opportunity to do it with one of her best friends and not have to pay, she said yes in a heartbeat.
From there all that was left was checking with her parents to make sure they were okay with her going, and since she had known Otohime for so long they were almost as quick to say yes as she was. The rest of the year leading up to the trip felt like it dragged on forever despite the fact that she was enjoying her time at UA progressing her story of becoming a great hero one day, but when school was finally out and she was able to start packing for the trip, she was practically on cloud nine for the whole week leading up to the big day.
She must have spent hours messaging back and forth with Otohime setting out plans for their trip and discussing their general happiness to finally have some time to relax and recharge from all the difficult training and schoolwork they had been enduring practically non stop. That, and she put a good amount of time into planning out the perfect outfits and looks to match, thanking the heavens that her suitcase was big enough to fit all of her things. Despite their early departure, when Kaguya finally met up with Otohime and her family early the morning of their flight, she was more than just a bit thrilled and was practically bouncing on her heels and excitedly chatting with Otohime the entire time they waited to load onto the fancy plane Otohime’s parents had booked their flight on. It was only moments after she sat down and got comfortable, however, that Kaguya felt her eyes become heavy and before she knew it her head was on Otohime’s shoulder and she was out like a light.
While Otohime followed soon after in falling asleep, she was also the first awake but she was sure to shake Kaguya awake only seconds later. For a moment, Kaguya was close to asking for ‘just five more minutes’, but her eyes widened in awe as she finally looked to where Otohime was pointing. The view from above Paris was stunning, especially with the sun rising and basking the entire area in a beautiful glow, and her excitement to finally emerge herself in the culture got all revved up all over again. She and Otohime were glued to the small window the whole way down and they were both lucky to have seats so close to the entrance as they were the first ones off as well.
It was hard to keep herself contained, but Kaguya tried her best to keep herself in order while she was still with Otohime’s parents as they went through the normal processes of an airport before being picked up by an unsurprisingly nice car and driven to a hotel that was just as lavish. While Otohime didn’t seem as shocked by all of this, Kaguya was left feeling as if she had been thrown into a world of royalty and her jaw was almost permanently dropped as she stared at evern fancy fixture or expensive looking piece of furniture she saw. She was even more excited to find that she had her own room that was more like an apartment that was luckily connected to Otohime’s so they could mind their own business without bothering her parents too much, but at the same time, neither of the girls planned to spend much time sitting around in the hotel anyways.
It only took a short conversation and a little bit of convincing from Otohime with her parents to allow her to go out with Kaguya for the remainder of the day, obviously still accompanied by their driver, but it was better than having to stay in with Otohime’s parents as they finalized meetings and other things for their trip. Once they got the OK to go out, they wasted no time checking off things from their list that they wanted to do. From local cafes for lunch and dinner to a few shopping hot spots, their day went in a flash and while they had wanted to stay out a bit longer, the plane ride had warn them down already and drowsiness was quick to follow once the sun set and they finally decided to call it quits for their first day and head back to the hotel.
While their first day of adventures had been cut somewhat short by exhaustion, Kaguya wasn’t too worried as she was sure they would have another opportunity to go out together, however once morning rolled around Otohime was informed that she actually would have to participate in the day’s family gathering of sorts and as much as her parents loved Kaguya, they couldn’t really let her come along. Surprisingly Otohime was more upset about this compared to Kaguya as she wasn’t the biggest fan of family functions as they tended to be too serious and stuffy for her tastes, but Kaguya assured her that she would be fine and in return, Otohime’s parents were nice enough to gift her some spending money as well as use of their driver for her day so she could go out and about for a little bit.
Kaguya could have thanked them for their graciousness a thousand times more than she had but they had to get going to meet up with family pretty quickly so she really only had time for a few thank you’s and a goodbye to them all. Once they were gone, she sat by herself awkwardly trying to figure out how she was going to conduct her day. To be honest, she had really only planned for the things she wanted to do with Otohime, not for anything she’d want to do alone. Still, she didn’t want to go ahead and do the things she already wanted to do with her best friend, so instead she decided to wing it and ask the driver whom she was hoping would have some advice. Luckily, the young man was already waiting for her and was nice enough to offer advice for some museums and other shopping districts she had yet to visit and even went as far as giving her a small translator so he wouldn’t have to follow her around all day and make her feel as if she were being babysat or something.
The first area she was dropped off at was incredible with rows and rows of fancy looking clothing stores and restaurants, but as she walked around she realized it was almost too fancy. Everything was way above her budget, even if she was gifted some money to spend and she felt a bit out of place in her more casual outfit because no matter how cute it was, it still felt cheap compared to the outfits of those walking around her. It only took her about a half an hour before she called for the driver again, but unfortunately the next place wasn’t much better and she found herself wandering more towards the small park of the area where she wouldn’t be tempted to spend five hundred dollars on a pair of cute earrings. Despite the lavishness of the area, however, she could still say she was enjoying herself. That was, until she heard that painfully annoying voice filled to the brim with arrogance that she never, ever would have hoped to hear on a peaceful, fun vacation hundreds of miles from home.
“Well, well, well, running away from the unaffordable life of luxury are we!?”
Monoma Neito, a boy who may have been in Class B, but he was a Class A asshole. One that, dare she admit, got on her nerves only slightly more than he had the annoying ability to make her heart race. It was like her brain and her heart were in a never ending conflict when it came to him. Her heart said he was cute, her brain told her he was an ass, her heart fired back with the fact he actually wasn’t horrible company, her brain reminded her of all the times he’d spit sarcastic remarks at her. Things had been going back and forth like that for a while, but now all she could think of was the ridiculous coincidence that she would run into him out of all the people in the world literally a continent away from home in a huge city.
“Are you freaking stalking me or something, you’re such a creep.” She spat in response, turning to face his smug face with her arms crossed over her chest and beating herself up mentally for her first thought being ‘Hey, he actually looks cute when he’s not in uniform..’.
“Pfft, I have much better things to do. I have family that lives here so I visit most summers. What about you, hm Yu-chan?”
Kaguya’s eye twitched at that annoying nickname he had given her that she had told him not to call her a million times before, but she knew if she blew up on her for it he’d just feel more inclined to use it, so she simply sighed and clenched her fists before speaking.
“Otohime and her family invited me to join them, but they had some family business today.”
“Family business, huh?” He mumbled, leaning to the side to see that she really was on her own here which explained why she somehow ended up in such a pricy area. He could have just been on his way and ignored the fact that he was sort of..happy to see her in such odd circumstances, but he had time to kill for the rest of the day anyways, so he decided on something else. “Well this place is just going to blow through your probably tiny wallet anyways, you’re better off in Montmartre.”
For a moment, Kaguya simply looked at him in confusion, trying to figure out if he was actually giving her legit advice, but when she realized he was being genuine she was quick to pull her phone out to look the place up and try to find directions, mumbling a quiet ‘Oh, thanks..’ in response, but before she even had the chance to speak further, he had already interrupted her.
“Y’know I’m heading that way anyways and it’s not too far, I guess I could accompany you so you don’t get lost.” He hummed, trying his best to be overly condescending as usual to hide the fact that he was trying to be genuine and actually just wanted to spend time with her.
In any other situation, Kaguya’s immediate answer would have been ‘no’, but she didn’t know the area and he seemed to know it pretty well, plus how bad could spending just an hour or so with him be?
“Alright.” She said defiantly, “But the second you get on my damn nerves I’m dropping you.”
“Oh of course, I’d expect nothing less from you.”
With that he pushed past her and began to lead the way. The first few minutes of their journey were quiet, but eventually he chose to break the silence and for once, their conversation wasn’t fueled by an endless cycle of snarkiness. She hated to admit it, but the area he had suggested was actually extremely cute with amazing quirky little shops that were within her budget and he didn’t seem to mind sitting around waiting for her when she went to try things on, in fact, he seemed to be enjoying himself just as she had been. Despite her best efforts, when she finally noticed the sun setting she had to finally tell herself that time really does fly when you’re having fun and this time around, she was surprised to be having fun with him instead of Otohime. What surprised her even more was when he offered to take her to some restaurant he swore up and down had the best pasta ever and she couldn’t help but say ‘fuck it’ and push her pride aside to agree.
Luckily, he was right about the pasta as she’d practically never tasted something so good in her entire life. Plus, the two of them joked and made fun of all the snooty looking people around them and it was overall a great time. That was, until the bill came. Unfortunately, it was a bit more than Monoma had expected as he realized dessert was what had pushed him over his budget and even when Kaguya offered to help with what little she had left after her mini shopping spree, they were still short. Kaguya was honestly debating sending a shameful text to Otohime or the driver to ask to borrow some money, but Monoma had a different idea, and it was absolutely fucking ridiculous.
‘It would be simple’, he said ‘This stupid class ring can pull off as an engagement ring, we just have to draw enough attention so the waiter knows!’ he said. Because he made the idea of a fake engagement sound so simple and like it was no big deal, Kaguya groaned and agreed after some more arguing and making him promise three times that he would never, ever bring this up anywhere else. She figured maybe a few people would notice at most, but no, once he was on one knee in front of her, nearly the whole restaurant was staring and gasping making her face burn in retaliation, but it was too late to turn back and she had no choice but to utter out an awkward ‘Yes’ as Monoma slipped that cheap ring of his on to her finger and the restaurant burst into a choir of aww’s and congratulatory claps as he stood up and hugged her and she had to tell herself the warmth she was feeling was caused by her burning anger and not by how cozy his hugs felt.
In the end though, his stupid plan worked even better than either of them had expected, the manager of the place even coming out to congratulate them and saying how they made such cute couple that she just had to have their entire meal on the house and even sent them off with a box of fancy chocolates. It was when they finally left and were far enough away from all the drama that she whacked him up the side of the head.
“Ow! What the hell!?”
“You said you weren’t going to make a scene!!”
“Wh- It’s not like I was trying!! And my scene got us a free meal, so you’re welcome!!”
Kaguya huffed, her cheeks still red and her mind still stupidly lingering on the idea of them being a couple, but only if she knew that he was just itching to agree that they really would make a cute couple.
“Whatever!” She grumbled, stomping off ahead of him. “Next time, I’m not even gonna offer to help pay and we’re going to someplace that’s actually affordable you overspending asshole!”
It was funny how such insulting words made him snap out of his anger, but that was only because of his selective hearing and the fact that her insults went in one ear and out the other.
“Next time, huh?” He spoke smugly, chuckling to himself as he saw her halt her movements and flinch before quickly whipping around, her face as red as a cherry.
“Y-YOU KNOW WHAT I MEANT, MONOMA! NOT NEXT TIME! JUST- I MEANT–UGH, NEVERMIND!” She yelled, turning around and beginning to stomp off once more while squishing her cheeks together in an attempt to make the redness calm down.
Still, her words and her face spoke a truth that she wasn’t quite ready to speak herself, but luckily Monoma was a patient boy and he was more than happy to bide his time until ‘next time’.
